Encaustic means painting with heat. Encaustic is an ancient method of painting practiced by Greek and Egytian artists thousands af years ago. Two thousand year old examples of encauStic art exists today in the form of Egyptian Fayum portraits on funeral casings. The paint consists of beeswax, darmar tree resin, and pigment. Paint is melted and applied in its molten form, as you would paint. The painting is created with many layers of heated wax, painted with a brush, heating or fusing after each wax layer is applied. Sometimes carving down for the desired results.
CARE FOR ENCAUSTIC ART
Wax melts at 150 degrees, therefore the art will not melt in normal situations. Encaustic art work should be cared for as you would any fine art painting. Do not hang in direct sunlight or leave in a hot car. The piece may periodically be dusted.
